Why did he flop in WWE? The crowds were so hot for him at the start and he had a badass, dangerous aura that nobody in the business had at the time.

Neck injuries.

He's like 5'9" max too. Almost all the ECW guys (including him) were heavily injured by the time they got to WWE. Also MMA gimmick was ahead of its time and WWE didn't know how to book him. They couldn't book Steve Blackman for shit either and he was good. Watch the Lion's Den match with Shamrock. That shit was fire.

There's no world where Taz is 5'9. He's probably 5'4-5'6 at most. Can't be much if any taller than Rey compared to Triple H.
That all aside. I don't think the guy being outright buried qualifies as a flop. Came in super hot at MSG and beat an undefeated Angle. He started off as the Taz everyone knew from ECW but then the booking turned on him fast. He could've been a way bigger deal. Nothing he couldn't have backed up. They just didn't want to put him over. Everyone always looks to WCW guys as missed opportunities from the Invasion, but there were a handful of ECW names that could've been instant main eventers if handled properly like Taz, Justin, Rhino.

Haven't stood next to him with a height chart but I wouldn't rule it out. Eye up where his head lines up with Triple H and do the same with Rey here. It's not very if far off at all. Billed heights are one of the most exaggerated wrestling stats there are. Triple H in all actuality is probably a little over 6'. Are you saying in that photo of those two above that there's only a 3" difference there? Could be close to a full foot

I'm not an expert, but Barely Legal in 1997 might be a good place to start. First ever ECW pay per view and I think the first meeting between Taz and Sabu that they were teasing forever.

The Bam Bam Bigelow matches were very well booked and that's pretty much it. Like many iconic ECW guys, he wasn't actually anything special in the ring.
