Yes, the execs hated wrestling and wanted it gone. But if it had still been the ratings and revenue juggernaut it had been in 96 and 97, they would have had a lot harder time justifying giving it the axe. The machinations and bungling of Russo, Bischoff, Hogan, and Nash made it easy for them.
It's like if there's a new owner/boss at your job who is just looking for a chance to fire you, and you go and take a shit on his desk and then be all like,
