The kind of spinal trauma that killed Misawa wasn't really affected by wear and tear. It's more that he had let his body go, his neck muscles weakened, and he was uncharacteristically sloppy and overrotated, taking the bump wrong.
It's incredibly sad and ironic that the guy who took and gave some of the most dangerous bumps safely would die in such a way and really, only the fans can be held to blame. They rejected the younger guys and made Misawa stay too long.
