First I don’t think any young guy was getting over. Japanese wrestling fans view which promotion they support in the same way Americans support sports teams. So I think a lot of Noah fans were planning to jump back to all Japan when the pillars retired.
As for Rikio as an individual, good size, I’ve actually seen him use sumo stuff in a way that was actually convincing. A good but not great wrestler.
Someone needed to beat kobashi. And Rikio was in the position to gain the most from it even if it didn’t turn him into a draw.
