Howdy started strong, but they needed to be a bit more obvious with his character because most people didn’t know what the fuck was happening. You had to pay attention to little ‘Easter eggs’ and things like Bray’s theme music to ‘get’ the character. It would have been better with less metaphor attached but that is Bray in a nutshell.
The whole gimmick is a jealous Bo fucking up Bray’s big comeback because ‘it should have been me.’ That’s a solid start. Bo was jealous he peaked in NXT and when he found out his brother was getting ANOTHER chance at the spotlight he thought ‘fuck this’ and played spoiler.
He was a dealer trying to get a recovering junkie to take another fix. He knew Bray was obsessed with wearing a mask and destroying his body to hurt people, so for weeks he poked and needled Bray with temptations. Bray went from a ‘happy to be here’ face to snapping at stage hands and attacking cameramen and insulting the fans. Until at last he offered Bray a mask and he was ready to take it and be Bo’s pet monster. Howdy did the same to Bliss via Lily. The angle would have been Bray and Bliss fighting to escape the clutches of the evil Howdy who was using their trauma against them.
But the way they told that story was the shits and no one got it and Vince came back so the Funhouse came back and Howdy became Bray’s new lackey and everything was ruined forever.
Could have been a hot angle, but went about it in a 2deep4u way and it turned to shit like every story Bray tries to tell.
