Because Vince realised that they gained popularity partly by being edgy crash TV, and when ratings started to diminish post-WCW and Austin/Rock. he decided to double-down on the edgy stuff, not realising that people had largely moved on from that and his core wrestling fanbase didn't want it, so he just drove people away.
But it's funny to look back at. It was so off the wall, it's like a completely different entity to what WWE is now; a show featuring simulated necrophilia, people getting burned alive, a stutter gimmick, fag weddings, rape. miscarriages, thinly veiled racism and a whole littany of shit to degrade women (bikini contests, b&p matches, puddin' matches, lesbian angles, various storylines portraying women as complete sluts eg. Melina fucking Batista for the possibility he helps her team one time)- that's all pretty well divorced from the sterile, watered-down, corporate-pandering schlock we get now.
