They still stay friends.
MJF gets a couple of defenses thanks to Cole helping him cheat.
Adam Cole wins a #1 contender battle Royale or whatever.
Says "I don't wanna wrestle my best friend!"
Tiny Khan or whomever gets mad and says fine triple threat match with some random scrub who cares.
Random scrub is about to kill Cole and MJF pushes him away and MJF dies instead.
Cole takes advantage and kills scrub and wins the strap.
MJF is flabbergasted but accepting.
Celebrates with Cole.
Over the next couple of weeks or months you see MJF seething more and more and Cole becoming more and more of a dick.
Essentially, they swap roles.
Until finally MJF snaps but doesn't hit him. He just very aggressively ask for a 1on1 match. Best man wins.
Cole says sure lil bud and hugs him.
MJF is going in as a semi-face and Cole is going in as cocky heel that doesn't cheat.
MJF wins by cheating.
2 time champ.
