Can’t seem to break on through because The Rock and Austin are the top guys. Reinvents himself as the Game. The WCW buyout happens, Brock is right around the corner. Hogan is back, Shawn is back. He catches that crazy injury and comes back more over than he ever was. All shitposting aside, that pop he got at MSG when he returned was top 5 of all time. His pop at the Rumble was the biggest of the night. Then Rock and Austin refused to do the honors for him at Wrestlemania and his coronation as Undisputed champ got cooled off by having Jericho as the guy who puts him over. All his heat starts seeping away just as his influence behind the scenes is growing and growing and he initiates the reign of terror. Reinvents himself with Evolution. Constantly undermining Randy and Batista. Etc etc etc. The Authority, the Wrestlemania entrance years. Gets control of NXT and really weirdly becomes the champion of Indy shitters everywhere. The power struggles backstage with his father in law who just won’t go away. The heart attack, Vince stepping away for a bit, Steph resigning, the sale. All his power, all his clout, none of it derives from his work as a wrestler or his drawing power, or backstage politics of the type Hogan or Shawn used. it all comes from his decision to start fucking Steph. It’s fascinating stuff.
