Lack of star power coupled with a lack of competition to keep WWE on their toes and encourage them to keep things fresh. Plus Triple Gaytch and Stephanie getting more creative control and holding back anyone that may have become a star. Cena was NOT the guy. He was the second choice after Brock quit. Cena lacked intensity and came across as if wrestling was one big inside joke, and he was the face of it at the time. Things got much worse after they went PG officially in 2008.

Seems to me that Attitude was a desperate last roll of the dice attempt to save WWF that actually worked. It was edgy and cool with all the sex and violence, it was anti mainstream, anti WCW. Along with all the awesone wrestling games of that era (note how that graph peaks at the same time as PS1/N64) they pulled in the 18-30 demographic big time but the support of that demographic is dependant on your product being percieved as cool and wrestling became uncool, plus its hard to maintain an alternative image when there is no other alternative.

They stopped the bleeding. When Sullivans committee took over the ratings fell and they had to call Russo back. And those ratings were obtained with a lot of the legends being written off for a while. And he was not sent home, he went home because he did not want to be a part of a committe.

raw went from cutting edge trash tv you couldnt miss or look away from to toddler shit and fart joke silliness because thats what vince likes and fell back to after they recycled all russos angles to death after he left.

the official catalyst for the audience exodus was austin becoming a heel comedy act. casuals werent ready to see that shit and the hangers on left shortly thereafter with the flippyshitters being given mainevents.

wrestlers leave and retire all the time. but before there was always someone new who was actually good and someone people wanted to see to step into that spot.
