It's a need for herd approval that insecure spineless people crave and judge everything in their life by. People who have no true personality of their own and just like whatever is mainstream/popular/!in" so they don't have to think for themself or risk any form of social ostracization etc. Just a desperate insecure need to be accepted.
People who don't understand you don't need to "justify" your own hobbies or personal interests to anyone who is a sane rational adult.
