Mcnulty isn’t Irish. It’s mentioned multiple times in the show by different characters.
The running joke is that he’s an Irish stereotype (alcoholic, abusive, actually happier walking the beat, quick to create vendettas for slights real or imagined) but not actually Irish.

Not sure it’s the Jannetty. Sopranos was both critically acclaimed and popped ratings and was baseline pop culture. The Wire was even more critically acclaimed by stuff like Peabody’s and critics who considered it the highest end of prestige TV. It never won an Emmy and never popped ratings. It’s more like a smark darling and over time it’s become more and more accepted. No one really watched it when it aired.

Deadwood was the real Michaels anyway. West world is the Jannetty.
