Not really. He was in FMW for one night. I don’t think Japan really cared for Shawn in the 90’s. They were more into guys like Shamrock and Vader. He probably would’ve made it though.

Ricky Fuji was a copy of Shawn(even using his original theme when he was with Sherri) so I would still consider that Shawn getting over and the one night he was there the crowd loved him

What gaijins like Shawn were over in 90’s Japan? I can’t think of any. I think the Japanese preferred big guys like Bigelow, Vader or proven shoot guys like Shamrock. Shawn falls into neither category. I really don’t know how he’d fare against Chono, Hashimoto, Muta, Inoki, whoever. I know he would not have made it against Misawa and Kawada. RVD got his ass beat in Japan, plus he wasn’t that over at the time. I’m just guessing.

Probably, but let’s also keep in mind Shawn kept up with Japanese wrestling and respected it. I’d assume if he went to NJPW/AJPW, he’d know the style and adjust to it. Given the fact he never went and never got the opportunity to do a crossover event (he was pitched to wrestle Kobashi in 97, btw) it’s hard to say. I’ve done a serious amount of autistic research on this. My conclusion is he’d be popular, but wouldn’t like the style.

Think about it like this, the Mid-South fans were used to big tough guys like Jim Duggan and Junkyard Dog, that didn't stop the Rock n' Roll Express and The Fantastics from getting over (specially with the girls)
