Nah, he's right. Heel Austin was a terrible idea and ended the boon period. People had only just gotten the Rattlesnake back and didn't want to boo him. It's around this point, with no real competition, that the creative and booking took a fucking nosedive. Triple-H's return, failed face push, and reign of terror would ensure wrestling would become a niche and never become a cultural touchstone again.

As far as I understand, business was still good with heel Austin, even if it’s not what the fans wanted. I agree it was a stupid idea. I still don’t think that particular angle killed wrestling or was even the reason the boom ended. The boom period was always going to end and dip off. WWE becoming a monopoly and pushing their shitters is what really killed it. I can’t tell you how many times people told me they stopped watching because Austin and Rock left.

Business wasn't completely in the tank, because Austin was still a draw. Furthermore, the invasion angle (botched as it was) still did big business. 2002 was when business really started to go down. Raw's ratings were tanking under HHH. Austin and Rock carried that company and then Big leagued it when Vince and Cunter were hellbent on driving it into a crater.

Austin leading the charge, since it was WCW who fired him. HHH in the vanguard, with the possibility he'll join Hall and Nash, his klique brothers. The questioning of loyalty of people like Jericho, Benoit, Eddie, and others, mistrust sown by a double agent (possibly Stephaine). It's amazing how much they fucked up the invasion.

What killed the business was the fucking mishandling of the WCW/ECW Invasion. Non-WWE talent got buried just to fuel Vince's ego. As a result, WCW fans left and never came back to wrestling of any sort and ECW fans started watching all the indies and turned them into ECW knockoffs.

The brit marks lick Hunters butthole because they all started watching wrestling in 2014 and belive all the propaganda about Hunter being huge. Yeah he got a pop coming back from the quad tear up until everyone realized he was going over Jericho YET AGAIN and it was gonna cement him as a 2nd tier guy when fans wanted him and the Rock as the big two after Austin left. Fair. But after those Turner contracts expired and Vince brought in DDP, Flair, Hall, Nash, Goldberg, Steiner, Hogan, etc., He proceeded to bury each and every one of them anyhow. So I don't think bringing them in earlier would have changed anything. Vince's ego just won't allow him to believe, or let anyone else believe, anybody was ever more successful than him. Just look at all the revisionist history DVDs he's put out through the years.
