I respect a wrestler more if they aren’t career WWE guys. Undertaker and Shawn Michaels are great, but they never made it in Japan, Mexico, Europe or any other American promotion. Kurt did make it in Japan. RVD made it in Japan. Hogan made it in Japan in a big way. I understand it’s just a place to work, but I can’t help but respect Hogan a little more than Austin because he proved he made it everywhere. I don’t doubt that Shawn, Taker, Rock, etc could’ve made it in other companies but the fact we never saw it (Taker did wrestle in Japan, I know) I’m kinda like, whatever, they don’t have the versatility. It feels like because they’re WWE lifers, the company gets to rewrite history about their careers in a more positive way.

Yeah, I don’t mean a guy just making it in Japan, but anywhere, multiple places. RVD made it in ECW, WWE and Japan. Foley made it in WCW, ECW, WWF, Japan, everywhere. I know it’s hard to work anywhere else if you’ve never been fired by WWE, and they don’t do cross promotion stuff like WCW did, so it’s hard to say how guys like Shawn or Rock would fare elsewhere. To me, it shows versatility and the ability to adapt. I’d feel the same about a Japanese guy being able to make it in America. It’s not the biggest knock on anyones career if they’re a WWE, NJPW, CMLL, whatever lifer, but guys that have been multiple places are more interesting to me.

A buddy of mine and I were talking about a theoretical draft where you can take any wrestler, in their prime, and who your number one overall pick would be and I think it’s hard to argue against Kurt Angle. He could do anything and even in a late 80s wrestling environment he can play the all American babyface just as well as anyone. Brock would also be hard to pass on if you had the 1st overall,

Besides Shawn there was no one really on his level in-ring wise in the WWE after he left for TNA. He maybe could have had good matches with Batista and another with Taker, but he really needed the angle with Joe to rejuvenate himself. I don't really see there being anything that signified what that did to him in WWE during the same years.
