A mixture of HBk/Flair, Undertaker/HBK 2, and Ricochet/Osprey. HBK/Flair pushed the more dramatic side of the in ring story telling even though the match because everyone wants an "I'm sorry I love you" moment. Taker/HBK 2 pushed the false finisher spam. Ricochet/Osprey is responsible for all the flippy shitters and no selling we see today. This faggy sequence set us back about 10 years.

2007 was pretty good. Cena had some great matches even though they had ruined Edge the year before, Batista was pretty good on smackdown, Randy's heel transformation was good, Taker's stuff was good, Punk had a good year, Jeff was over as fuck. There were also pretty good matches. You could tell that the main event was really struggling though and the gaps left by Jericho, Angle, Lesnar the years before were really becoming obvious.

If by "modern era" you mean "the era when nothing matters and wrestlers don't understand even the basics and flip around every match" then it started around the the RoH era with the Young Bucks and Kenny Olivier in NJPW
