Dean wasn't ready back then. Looked emo. Still a secret alcoholic. Idolized Austin too much. Jon Moxley would've fared differently, imo. He doesn't care as much.

Dean told some producers what he didn't want to talk about.
Austin was never told so he asks questions to get the shoot backstory of Jon Moxley.
Dean feels backstabbed and caught off guard so he freezes up and stonewalls Austin for the rest of the podcast.
Dean, who was champ at the time, ends up looking like a disinterested guy with no charisma in the eyes of McMahon and WWE higher-ups.
Dean gets treated like shit and made to do humiliating things as a result.
