It was a mix. At the time there were already the types who would be considered the anti-smarks. They hated Chris Benoit because he was a manlet, same reason as Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio (Though they were at least justified with Rey in that his post-Eddie-death run was fucking horrible)

For the most part, people liked him a lot. Think of it sort of like Bryan Danielson nowadays.

No serious answer, he was hailed as a legend in the making and all-around one the best and most respected workers in the business.
That's one of the things that makes his end so tragic. I watched his whole era and even if some thought he was a manlet we all knew he was tough and could work his ass off in the ring with anybody.

His workrate was so good that it got him into the main event at WM20. He was appreciated for the most part. He was absolutely the most legit of the vanilla midgets. He deserved to main event this is the truth. Even corrupt ass WCW gave him lots of spotlight and even tried getting him to stay with a heavyweight title win so that should tell you all you need to know. They sure as hell weren't going to do the same for Guererro or Malekno.
