1) He's not an excellent workrate type wrestler, so that already has you at a disadvantage in NJPW when you're booked as a main eventer
2) He was basically just running a VDS type gimmick at this point in time
3) He got attached to the worst storyline in Bullet Club history, which isn't entirely his fault but has also a lot to do with the gay Elite shit
4) He didn't care that much about NJPW to begin with. He was mostly a ROH guy that just happened to do some NJPW dates as a "Big star" type guy. Except he was nowhere near the big star that guys like Jon Moxley and Chris Jericho would end up being
As a result, he was put in big spots where the crowd couldn't give less of a shit about him. The only time he worked was when he was selling for Kota Ibushi's offense.
