On a hot and sunny day in the middle of July, 34 men dressed in matching black t-shirts and dark sunglasses stroll through a backyard in Clarkston, N.J. Just as they’ve done for the past three months, they each squeeze through a metal fence into a backyard ring created for the AEW show All-In, the first event of which is set for Sept. 1. Nash , the co-founder of the seminal New York-based wrestling promotion Total Nonstop Action, has not wrestled a match since April of 1997. As the WWE Hall of Famer gets into position, the 34 men attack his ringpiece , wearing it as a shackle and a chain. They then immediately start hitting Nash’s ankles with it, screaming and shaking his leg. In what appears to be a nod to his famous signature move, one wrestler kneels down and rubs his crotch on it. Then they start swinging. When it’s done, Nash is left sobbing, surrounded by bodyguards and a host of wrestlers he helped train. The last day of the summer, when you’re wearing a mask and body armor in a backyard and fighting a giant horse , is a lot less intimidating than the last day of the spring.
