It's like the American obsession with perfectly straight polished whiter-than-ivory teeth. Takes out all the soul and character, makes you fit in, makes you look like a dozen a dime.
Ironically enough, looks revolting. So does that poster with all the airbrushing.
If they only did colour balancing, it would've been a better poster.
