I think a lot of trends in the modern era are just reactions to the ruthless aggression and PG eras of WWE. For example, ruthless aggression had a plethora of giant roided up meatheads who wrestled slow boring matches, so eventually smaller indie guys who worked super fast and did a ton of spots started growing in popularity. Nowadays everyone is a manlet spot monkey because of this.
I think the excess of factions is an example of the same thing. After the attitude era WWE cut down heavily on the factions for whatever reason. And whenever they did book a faction it would only ever have a max of three members. Now that the fans have been deprived of factions for so long they're making a comeback. But of course companies like AEW overdo the shit out of it
