Historical context immediately pre-All In of exasperation with WWE; how everyone was so defeated they weren't even talking about a competitor. 5 years or so prior Cornette was convinced pro wrestling would die and lose to MMA; at that same time TNA, the latest and last competitor, had effectively died.

Without understanding all of that it's easy to look at the card and wonder how this tailspun into an initially successful company. Nobody cared if it was mediocre, they were desperate for something new and willing to cling to the promises of gradual improvement.

The bloom is off the rose is not a meme. People tolerated AEW's flaws until it became evident they'd never be addressed.

actually a good post. AEW debuting right after the infamous Hell in a Cell 2019 also gave them so much more steam. Probably the PPV that received the most hatred since New Blood Rising.

Yes and no. AEW was a genuine alternative to WWE and wasn't remotely like it. It was very much its own beast for better or for worse, a real melting pot. You had sensibilities and styles from WCW, ECW, WWF, NWA, NJPW, DDT, ROH, and Lucha Underground, along with characters that felt fresh and new. This blend of styles created an interesting, pseudo-crash TV sort of product that was anything but formulaic.

Covid really fucked a lot of AEW original plans and stories, yet also helped generate a ton of goodwill because of how they handled themselves. It also helped that against NXT they were, more often than not, the straight-up better product.

A lot of new fans came in and the company was growing. What's harmed AEW was -

>CM Punk's arrival
>Loss of its unique identity
>Loss of Cody Rhodes
>Flood of NXT and WWEjects
>Dropping OG characters and wrestlers the audience got invested in for NXT/WWEjects
>TK turning AEW into a platform for Phil's ego.
>Lingering production issues.
>TK trash booking.

It really weird how Tony throw aside a bunch of the people who were featured on AEW television at a time they were way hotter for the guys they beat. Then again a lot of that is his own shortcomings in failing to maintain momentum for...well anyone.
Like if you ask me there hasn't been a good AEW title reign since Jericho. Sure they all have their moments and great matches, but Jericho's was the only one that actually felt like a legit world title reign. The show was pretty much always about him like it should be. Hangman spent most his title reign in the midcard.

Jericho first title reign was fucking magical. I didn't mind Moxley's (though what made that for me was MJF's we need a new champion campaign) and Omega's was also great - though limited due to Covid. Hangman is where it all beings to go downhill and that was because TK really wanted Punk to be the face of his company.

If you look at the ratings, you'll notice that AEW did best when it focused on OG acts. It wasn't just the WWEjects who were the problem though, TK gained a real fetish for Dante Martin, Wheeler Yuta, and Daniel Gracia, over-exposing them. As for the Codyverse, it wasn't great, but there were other issues that were out of Cody's control. If you'll remember, the first Blood and Guts match was meant to be the Elite (with Cody) vs the Inner Circle. Covid came in and fucked everything up.

Yeah, after Cody left there was a drop in 100.000 fans which they've really recovered from. Speaking for myself and a few friends we stopped watching AEW when it became WWElite starring Phil Brooks. I've started again recently, but depending on TK's actions, I could cancel my subscription and not fucking bother.
