So what exactly was his plan? If he was just going to attack jericho why waste weeks trying to get him to join? I guess it could be that he wanted to break up JAS but that would rely on him somehow knowing that everyone would randomly turn on jericho because he wanted to be part of another group.

There was no plan. Jericho wanted to get rid of the JAS, but keep Sammy and turn face. So they came up with this convoluted angle of the JAS leaving him, to get him sympathy. Then him turning on the biggest heel, to turn face, and have Sammy slingshot off the face turn with him. It was transparent and shit.
