As far as angles and stories go he's always had more range as a heel, but they tried that. To the cheapest of extents with the your team sucks stuff. And he still got cheered. Some people just don't like him and maybe never did. Some are going to be contrarian just for the sake of it. Countless people love the dude and he gets the biggest pop on just about any show he's on.

I liked him in E&C when I was a kid. But their sudden push of a bunch of midcarders who couldn't talk particularly well into the title scene in the mid 00s is why I stopped watching for almost a decade. Guys like Edge, Jeff Hardy, Rey Mysterio just didn't feel like they belonged in the main event scene to me.
