The in ring action is the most exciting and important part, yes, the technicalities and the craft of it. But ultimately I'm going to want a reason to care who wins and who loses. Friendly exhibition matches are fun for all of about 2 matches before it gets boring. And that's how AEW comes across. I can't suspend my disbelief, it's like a game of happy families where everyone is in on it and it's a heckin wholesome cooperative performance. I don't want to watch two actors working together to put on a match, I want to watch two believable characters actually fighting each other. That's what makes each maneuver, each reversal, each near fall and each punch mean something, otherwise you're just landing them for the sake of it.
In other words imagine a football league where every game was an unranked preseason or friendly. That's basically AEW.
