Were his matches really that bad? The only Fiend match I ever watched was his strap match vs Daniel Bryan at Royal Rumble 2020 and I thought it was pretty good

The hell in a cell match with Rollins had maybe the worst finish of amy match ever. The match against Goldberg is one of the worst matches ever, but that's on Goldy as much as Bray. The swamp fight against Braun might be the worst segment any wrestling program has ever put on.

eh, depends on the time period you watch him. His fiend matches were absolutely terrible besides the Rumble match.
Besides his feud with Randy, the Smackdown Live era, he had some pretty good matches.
And of course, cult Bray era was pretty good besides a few stinkers.
But the Fiend era was legitimately so fucking bad, it's all people will remember the most. People will remember the HIAC match, the Goldberg match, etc. and not for the good reasons.

Pretty much this. He was almost irredeemable during his Fiend run. You just knew that he wasn't going to just suck, he was going to drag other people down with him. That's not to say he didn't sometimes do okay stuff like Wyatts vs. Shield or his cage match vs. Bryan Danielson, but most of his work is the exact type of stuff I get embarassed at liking WWE for.

He was totally unremarkable as Wyatt but fine enough that his character work could carry him

Bray always had the problem that his gimmicks required him to go over about 100% of the time and Vince was just never going to put him over like that. He should’ve gone the Foley route and played up the humanity of being crazy instead of the Boo Halloween style of early 90s Undertaker. Taker was 6’10” and physically intimidating. Wyatt was built like the fat kid at the comic store. I’m not trying to shit on him, I think he just never understood how to get his gimmicks over realistically and, beyond his gimmick, he never had much else. His promos were cringe, his matches had no psychology, and the stories he told were embarrassing…I guess I am shitting on him. It’s shocking he’s dead and I’m sad for his family, but I’m not going to lie about his career; he wasn’t very talented and I never enjoyed his work. Still, he was a worker I’ll probably always remember, even if for undesirable reasons, and I hope he rests in peace.

Yes, his matches and his promos fucking sucked. Even during his supposed "good" run, he just cut incoherent rambling nonsense. His return promo on Smackdown from this year was legitimately great, and that's it. Go watch that and nothing else.

That's a lie. He was constantly over with the fans and the fans always were excited when he had a new gimmick. He was good at character work and making the fans invested in everything he did and you can't take that away from him

but then you need to do something of value in the ring to coincide with that promo. He couldn't do jack shit in the ring to match his decent promos when the promo was good. He should have been a production guy and helped out in promos in a supportive way. He failed to deliver.

Don't talk shit, Bray was built like a fucking wall. He's legit 6'2 and was an all-american defensive liner in college. Yeah he's fat but he isn't on the same level as some weak fat nerd nor does he look like that.
