DJT was the worst of all the '16 GOP candidates, all of whom would've had an easier time beating Hillary, but he won because he was in a crowded field, the most famous candidate by far, and because he did the opposite of what everyone else did while running, which was enough to trick people into thinking he was sincere.
Biden wasn't the best candidate in '16. But he won anyway out of a combination of name-recognition and a last-minute assist from Clyburn. He was at least better than Warren. But fucking any other Republican would've gone onto a second term running against Biden. Especially if they were under seventy.
Being the best candidate is a lateral variable next to who wins the primary or the general.
