What Mania did was have a national program that kept up with the media explosion of the 80s when people had more disposable income than ever. Sure a lot of certain territories knew who the Freebirds were but every little kid in the country watched Hulk Hogans rock n wrestling. It only started to shink later as quality declined and Vince raided their talent . WCW might have been able to hedge them out if it formed earlier but even Vinces ideas were getting stale by the time it got going and a whole generation grew up thinking "Wrestling is WWF and comes on after cartoons where I see jobbers lose to guys that matter"
