To be fair I really liked that one myself.

One of the best examples of just doing something people wanted instead of trying to build it up. I seem to remember the leadup to it was very light on story but people were invested in it regardless.

That swamp cult leader era with just him, Harper and Rowan was great. It was unique and entertaining, and we were lucky that the Shield was around back then for them to play off of. This was back when Bray's long-winded promos actually had a fresh air of originality behind them, back when being in a program with him wasn't seen as a burial. Even Brock had no issue with working with Bray around that era
I swear, Bray's entire WWE career was like that Spongebob ripped pants episode

I've been going through the WWE network playlist ever since I found out he croaked. I hadn't seen any of the Fiend stuff before but I was a fan of his during the spooky swamp era.

He wasn't a great in ring wrestler at all. But he could still have a good match every now and then. He really would have fit in during the 80s when it was all about gimmicks, promos, and 5 moves of doom.

I really liked his Inferno match against Randy Orton. It was pure ridiculous spectacle. Probably the only good inferno match I've ever seen. A couple of his matches against Bryan Danielson were good. His last man standing vs. Cena was pretty entertaining. The elimination chamber where he wins the belt might be the best elimination chamber ever, but it didn't have much to do with his wrestling. The Wyatts vs. The Shield were some of the best trios matches of all time.

The Fiend stuff though, oh boy. I get what they were going for. He basically wanted to be a slasher movie villain. But that made for some awful matches. You only have to watch a few of his Fiend matches to see exactly why no one wanted to feud with him; he's going to make you look like a complete bum in every way imaginable. Not a fiend fan at all.

Yes. That one really hammered home to me that they were trying to make him like Jason Voorhees or Michael Myers. The referee jumping in front of Seth made me laugh so hard

People generally like the first iteration of the gimmick. It's once they made him some spooky spoopy bullshit that killed the gimmick and made him cringe.

It didn't help that he never seemed as invested as he was in the start.
