Many of those properties where empty for years and the banks just held them instead of lowering the prices (as basic bitch free market economics suggests) to attract tenants. With the rise of work-from-home and big tech layoffs many companies realize that having big offices are a waste of time and money and have decided to downsize or outright leave these Democrat run cities. The demand for housing never really goes away so they can afford to keep the same con running in the housing and rental markets, for now at least. If the value of homes fall and said homes are on the balance sheet of a bank, that bank gets fucked.

It's far more efficient to have multiple family members living under one roof than it is for everyone to be separated and each paying rent to a different landlord.
