Chris Jericho has proven he is the best of all time in the long run at this point so who is even doubting? Look what he did by practicalty inviting aew to take on wwe when he could have retired in Japan or come back and won more belts in wwe for one last run? He's helped create the entire new generation of wrestling if is isn't for Jericho there is no wrestling at all, wrestling problemly does not even maybe exist.

this was the beginning of the end for me. after this, dudes figured out if they just showed up and remained moderately over EVENTUALLY they'd get a turn at the top because the actual stars needed new people to work with.

jericho, hunter, edge, hardy, and on and on owe their entire careers to bigger stars leaving shoes to fill.

He was a heel during that time. This was also during the period the titles were getting hotshotted to stupid levels anyways so it made sense back then and it makes sense now. You can't always have the good guys winning all the time. Jericho was pretty much a transitional champion at that point in time. Perfectly understandable they'd have him go over in a surprise.
