The term "ACE" isn't a wrestling exclusive term in Japan. They use it for other sports, even for idol groups.

Fujinami was meant to be Inoki's successor and the ace but he got Jannetty'd fucking hard by Choshu in popularity to the point where Inoki gave Choshu the book in the 90s.
