He had good matches with Razor, Taker, Austin, Jarrett, Jannetty and Foley. Bret, I’m so and so on those matches. You can probably make the argument his second run was better if you take match quality into account, but he was older, wasn’t as crazy with his gimmick and no longer had the desire to be on top. I think Bret and Shawn’s legacy suffered (match wise) because the roster in 90’s WWF just wasn’t that great.

He would’ve gotten over. RVD was doing his fast paced wrestling in AJPW and the crowd liked it. Probably would’ve gotten kicked in the face by Kawada, just like RVD, but it’s interesting to note Shawn did wrestle Kawada before. If we’re talking about match catalogs, Shawn gets mogged by the pillars, but I think it’s like you said, he was working with The Goon, Mabel and Doink. At the same rate, I can’t help but feel Kobashi could’ve gotten better matches out of Doink. No doubt in my mind someone like Kobashi is better though.

Yes but not for long and he never worked any meaningful matches with top Japanese names. He’s really a career WWE guy. Shawn never worked for AJPW or NJPW in any capacity. Just reffed for FMW. I wish he did. If only Shawn walked from WWF in the 90’s, like he threatened to do multiple times. Would’ve been kino. Shawn wrestling guys like Misawa, Muta, Tenryu, Hayabusa, you name it, could’ve been great.

King of the spot monkeys. Never had a good match with anyone who wasn’t a better worker than him. He had good athleticism and he was unique, but his promos were cringe, his attempts at “storytelling” were cringe, and he never made his opponent look good without them making themselves look good in spite of him. Vince’s decision to side with him in 97 is an all time stupid call. This fucker allegedly worshiped Flair but never seemed to understand what made Flair so great. Shawn gets a 7/10 for me. And those matches with Taker are overrated.

I don’t see it. Yes, Shawn did moonsaults, but that’s about it. He had a relatively basic move set and relied mostly on selling to tell a story. He wasn’t a breakneck speed wrestler that did flips and no sells. I don’t understand it. I’m sure the influence Shawn has on modern wrestling is true, I just think 1. Shawn wasn’t very flippy and 2. the wrestlers influenced by him must not remember Shawn’s matches or misunderstood them. Shawn would look out of place in todays wrestling scene. His move set was just some suplexes, chops, punches, kicks, one super kick and an occasional moonsault.

I honestly believe that he’s only the GOAT as far as WWE goes. If you take other companies into consideration, his stock, his catalog, they all shrink. Not to take anything away from him, WWF just didn’t give a shit about wrestling like that. Being a WWE guy is the greatest knock against him.
