WBD is in massive debt. Their main business is shut down due to the strikes and AEW is a fresh product they can use to make some money in ad revenue. While the ad revenue might not be massive it's still a positive they can use to keep investors on board.
Depending on how AEW performs WBD may keep them. They can use AEW to shill other products on Dynamite/Rampage/Collision. That's where the Nelson ratings are important. While many have cut cable and DVR, Nelson ratings are a basis for advertisers to gauge where to focus their ad campaigns. Why waste millions on ad revenue if people are just going to FF thru those ads? Remember WBD never came to AEW defense with press releases claiming larger viewership than was being reported via Neilson. It took their main industry shutting down to prop up what original content they currently have.
Streaming numbers are a point of contention with the strikers too. It's interesting WBD did release numbers for AEW. It's almost like the Noilly meme was successful and they felt they had to counter it somehow.
Make no mistake, WBD needs something positive to bring to the investor table. Given the $50billion debt and the strike, AEW has a real shot at success and growth. It's up to Tony and AEW execs to make sure they grow beyond the 800k-900k Nelson viewership.
