How is walking around, being basically fine, worse than spending your life in a wheelchair? Is that a real question? The point is accidents happen and Bret's own brother almost paralyzed a guy. Something to think about is that a large portion of the famous Stone Cold moments stem from Austin refusing to go in for surgery after this and doing something crazy (driving shit to the ring, kidnapping Vince, filling Vince's car with cement, etc) to make the fans happy while avoiding wrestling to not get injured even worse.
