He was only 17 or 18 when he was on WCW TV as one of the Jung Dragons. Wrestled a bunch in AJPW as well after WCW shut down before getting signed to WWE. The series of matches he had with Paul London on Velocity (as Akio) are must see. Straight up full on ROH/indy style matches of that era, happening right there on WWE TV on a filler C show that had no management interference preventing them from doing that style.
Big fan of the redneck gimmick. Comes off as a good dude in shoot interviews/podcasts etc.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aty6GW6bmScOnce famously got his job back in WWE after being released, then months later was visiting backstage when they were doing a show in his hometown, ran into Vince there who asked him "GOD DAMN PAL WHERE YA BEEN? JOHNNY WHY AREN'T WE DOING ANYTHING WITH THIS GUY?" to which Jimmy has to meekly inform him "uh well Sir I got my release papers about 6 months ago, I'm just here saying hi to everybody." And was back under WWE contract within a week for another run as the "ya boy" Asian redneck gimmick.
