I've often likened Vince with Bret and Austin like those cartoons where you have the retarded baby and the hapless pet who tries to protect them. You know the ones, the dog or the cat is just living their life and then the baby gets out of their crib and proceeds to wander onto a construction site or something like that. And then the poor animal goes rushing after them, steering them away from pits, and falling objects, and vehicles. In retrospect, that was the key difference between WWF's success and WCW failure. Austin and Bret thought about the company and tried to do things that would help it and by extension them. Hogan and Nash, on the other hand, only thought about themselves, company be damned (World War 3, Starcade 97 as the most glaring examples). I also think this was one of the reasons key reasons why the Austin vs. McMahon feud worked so well. Because, under all that showmanship and entertainment, there was a nugget of truth to it. Austin, and people like him, weren't who Vince wanted - just like Vince hadn't wanted Bret. Vince wanted guys Hunter, Shawn (and his tight asshole), Diesel, and Luger. And when they all flopped, and his back was literally against the wall, that is when guys like Hart and Austin were able to break out. If WWF was the dominant force in North America in the 96-99, Austin would have never broken out, because he is what Vince wants.
