Has SANADA been a flop as champ? I like him, but I don't think he's had many big defences (it's basically just the Tsuji and Kaito matches). I hope he gets the Shingo match at Royal Quest as that will be a great match

What's the point of Just 5 Guys? It doesn't help out Sanada at all. I doubt it sells much merch and it means we get people like Kanemaru and Taka in every main event.

It probably sells a decent amount. More variety in merch selling has no downside. They didn't the full merchandise rights for Suzuki-Gun, so the way they split that up into Strong Style, J5G and TMDK can only be a good thing. It's not like LIJ suffered in merch sales cause SANADA left.

The multimen main events. Who cares? For those kinds of matches, they're just as competent and fit like anyone else. And Kanemaru is based, anyways.

Even though he's held the belt for a long time and defended it against multiple people, Gedo has made it a point that the only person he beat that was actually really impressive was Okada. This is the classic "Establish someone" reign, except instead of it having no defenses or only one defense like what usually happens with these, he's just been having all defenses that serve the challenger more than the champion.

In hindsight, was it the right call having Okada and Kaito not meet in the G1? Kaito would have been in the Hikuleo spot so would have lost to Naito anyway

I think it was a reaction title reign due to Jay White leaving, much like Shingo's only title reign.

New Japan never was serious about Sanada prior to him winning the title. I didn't expect anything to change.

if anything, SANADA was dead in the water prior to J5G. back then, people were saying he would never beat Okada, would never be the guy, only over with fujos, and was basically the odd man out in LIJ. the change to J5G was exactly what SANADA needed, and they managed to pair it with some other stuff (change in style, story with Taichi, etc) that helped it make sense. it also helped J5G because they used to lose constantly.

I kept banking on the Ryogoku semi-finals being tailor made for Kaito/Okada. I was upset about him not going through but still felt he had a very good run.

Then he got booked in every single opener after that and I despised it. Naito/Kaito could've been special too

I'll probably be in the minority here, but it was fine. when was it that Okada demolished Kaito? February? it was too soon for Kaito and Okada to meet, especially since we couldn't expect Kaito to get on Okada's level that quickly. It took SANADA literal years to get a win off Okada.
