DDT started as a WWE parody. Sanshiro Takagi (DDT's boss) is a Stone Cold cosplayer, Yoshihiko the blow up doll that Corny is mad Omega and Ibushi wrestled is a parody of the Undertaker.
DDT has serious main events because they have good wrestlers and comedy doesn't draw but at the core they're still a comedy promotion

Wrestling works better and looks better in those dim-lit arenas that look like shady fight clubs. The exact problem has been them trying to fucking sterilize the entire product down to bland corporate shit to appeal to people who will never watch pro wrestling anyways like women and SJWs. Now everything has to be bright and colorful, and women wrestling gets the same screen time, and you can't even say the word ass without it being censored. You will never be able to attract all the casuals in the world, it's simply not possible, you can only attract the casuals who are already receptive to liking something violent like pro wrestling.

DDT isn't really growing but they have a niche that stays happy with these gimmicks. If DDT is struggling with anything it's being inconsistent with their identity. They want to be the goofiest version of sports entertainment possible but they also want Kobashi and Akiyama to help make them 90s AJPW. Takagi can't just stick with a relatively consistent theme. That said the DDT main event scene is pretty good and they have talented young guys even if the booking kinda sucks.

They don't and will never get it, anon. There's a magic balance between dark-gritty and big arenas that the late 70s to 90s captured perfectly. Wrestling used to look like a fucking movie, even in the colorful 80s WWF. Now it looks like a safe, sterile cartoon wrapped in plastic, appealing to the wrong people, with a mix of the wrong people in it.
