Dave Meltzer has been much more critical of AEW lately on Observer Radio. Why is this?

Because he doesn’t want it to fail . Being critical is ok but for some strange reason in the wrestling fandom it means you “picked a side”. If he fails then it’s back to the wrestling slump. If AEW fails the entire scene will be changed. I think for the better because it will prove mark booking doesn’t work .

He sounded sad on the last episode of wor I listened to. He basically said that when WWE was languishing the indies and AEW flourished but now that WWE is doing better that it's killing everyone else since no one can be bothered watching anything but WWE again

It was easier to overlook their faults when they had this mega show at Wembley looming because it was this indicator that, despite all the signs of decay that were present, there was still this big event on the horizon that signified enormous interest in the company. Now that Wembley is in the rear view mirror (with the added humiliation of the paid attendance “record” being total bullshit)c he’s left to face the cold reality of tv tapings at college gymnasiums that struggle to get 3k people in the building.

When AEW first started, it was obvious that Tony had been fantasy booking for years. He had plenty of material to work with. Say what you will about AEW's booking, but it used to be a lot more coherent. Now it's obvious that he's exhausted all that and he's having to make shit up as he goes along. Plus he's having to react to shit like injuries and Phil throwing temper-tantrums. And it's not pretty.

This. The straight edge sellout is headed back to the Fed, so everybody's happier, but the overall booking is very fragmented with random people facing each other with little rhyme or reason. They have a couple strong storylines and the rest of the show is about giving everybody some TV time. Which is great, but it's not the pandemic anymore. Gotta start booking Collision like it's the second show and not just extra matches.

He's also got to stop carrying the burden himself. They produce some great wrestling but it's not enough to compete. It never was for TNA, old ROH, etc.
