Nah I’m 100% with you. I can’t imagine watching wrestling for the storyline’s. They’re very rarely good and although I enjoy good promos I’m not watching a 2 hour TV show for a 3 minute promo. Pure fucking autism if anyone does that.
The older I’ve got the more I’ve actually found I enjoy the in ring side of things. Particularly sawdust wrestling.

Good matches are important but the problem is that smarks have corrupted what a good match is supposed to mean. It can be something very simple in moves and execution and it can even be something under 10 minutes as long as the wrestlers and story is something worth being invested in. You don't need all those flips and dives either. Shitty botch filled matches nonstop would kill anyone's enjoyment though including this guy. He just hasn't thought it out well enough yet is all.

The way the Young Bucks wrestle is very different to the way Jon Moxley wrestles and the way Jon Moxley wrestles is very different to the way ZSJ wrestles etc.

You can’t just brand everything you don’t like as being ‘smarky’ without listing examples.

I thought my post did that enough but if you need further explanation. Today smarks think if a match isn't resembling something like KO and Zayn vs Usos at Mania then its shit. Or something like Omega vs Bryan's draw match then its shit. Or really lots of DB's matches for that matter. Smarks are kind of like porn coomers that have burned through too much dopamine and now need to be as degenerate in their sex taste as Matt Riddle just to get off. Smarks have unironically probably watched too much damn wrestling and they also probably need to just tone it way down on being so overcritical on the wrestling and just learn to enjoy the simplicity of what the shows can be like again. Take Hogan for another example of a guy who knew how to work the crowd so well while getting away with doing the bare minimum in a match. Nobody could work the crowd better than him actually if you also account for the importance of working a crowd while attempting to do as little as possible. I'd argue Hogan was the GOAT at this. Did those casual fans think his matches were garbage? I doubt it. They wouldn't have given so much energy if they thought his matches sucked.

Austin/Undertaker from June 99 is the highest drawing RAW in history with over 10 million people, Hogan/Andre's SNME might be the most watched pro wrestling match State side ever. There's little to no "moves" in either match, characters and storyline drove people to watch.

Wrestling has always been at its best when the same story is being told inside the ring as outside of it.

Some of the greatest stories ever told in WWE, for example, were completed by the match. Bret Hart vs. Austin at WM13, for example. That feud is definitely lifted and enhanced greatly by the story they tell in the actual match.

Just give me a reason to care beyond "wrestler challenges for title". Many matches in the attitude era weren't great, but they all had characters and gimmicks in them to make us give a shit.
Even NJPW has storylines beyond what's told in-ring and none of them are over one wrestler being denied a shampoo commercial. There's a medium here.

Ring technicians with no other discernable talents rely on the work rate smarks to remain relevant. That's the only fanbase that rates the quality of fake fights like it's Olympic grade gymnastics. I thought Bryan sucked tbf but WWE gave him a neat little character with a catchy phrase and he pulled it off. The moves they do are different, yes, but they still all have the exact same indie style of wrestling though. They don't understand ring psychology, they don't understand how to sell injuries and height/power advantages and speed advantages. The people clamoring for match quality don't even have good tastes in matches, that's the problem. Even random throwaway WWE matches are better than Okada vs Omega, because WWE understands the basic psychology of a fight.

DeAngelo Williams (former NFL player) had exactly one match in his entire career and Meltzer said he had greatest-ever potential after it happened. Choregraphed matches have little purpose on their own, real life wrestling is not like a video game in that sense you need some promo battles/feuds going on in the background, could be a trash storyline but it still gives a fake fight some purpose (most bloodline promos are actually watchable for wrestling standards)
I do like watching soulless matches but after years of watching them every week they feel like action movies that involves stunt scenes and only stunt scenes, Bruce Lee took up acting for a reason you need more shit than just fake fights.

People care about who wins and who loses based on the story that unfolds before the fight takes place. What actually happens in the fight to reach that end is the most unimportant aspect of the presentation.

Wrestling is always the draw, the problem is that guys don't know how to work.

Hogan, Rock and Austin were great workers, regardless of what people have said. Sure, Hogan was known for his promos, but people forget how good he was at selling and drawing people in. He didn't have to do Movez or something to have a good match (some people have to due to height which is also ok) but his selling and how he'd grasp to the crowd was top-notch.

Miz can cut a promo, but he doesn't really draw me in because I think Corny is right on him (and others like Seth, MJF, Deannnnnnnn) look like people trying to play wrestler. With Hogan, he was good enough to show me that little Jimmy Hart hitting him with HTM's guitar hurt his back, but with guys today, it always feels like they're going through spots and waiting for the next one. The selling never looks genuine.

Match quality is important, but I disagree with Dave on what match quality means. It's not performing gymnastics, no selling, and finisher/kick-out spam. It's working a believable match that gets the audience invested in the outcome. Wrestling looks so fake and gay now because it's just a spot fest to impress Dave and his cronies. I don't care how cool a spot looks if it looks fake as fuck to set it up, and then gets no sold (or the wrestler forgets to sell the damage just a minute later). And then that same spot will just get repeated again and again, sometimes on the same show!

Even spot fests are fine. I loved the Hardys(back then), and I like Darby today. But the difference is that those guys always treated the shit like it actually is a high risk manuever that could work against them.

Bucks are the prime instigators of this, but when wrestlers are literally standing there waiting for the next spot, it's hard to watch. I can watch it at an indy because I expect botches and shit and at times it's fun, but to watch on TV or PPV, it's just wrong. Meltzer's line of thinking has changed over the years. The Lucha he liked was never this ridiculous and it came from stalwarts who actually did get over on TV. I don't see it with many of hte new talent. Guys like Pentagon and shit are not Mysterios or Juventuds.
