Normies never watched subs until Super came out, but from there Crunchyroll pushed the shit out of One Piece and Toei upped the budget a bit. It helped that the Luffy vs Katakuri fight took place around then so the fight fags also got their little dicks hard as well and it was decently animated.
Toei upped the budget for Wano which is basically an inconsistent, overly long fight fag arc as well, and Oda began to milk the length of it. As for people following, nearly all of the OP tubers are old Super tubers. One Piece also had decent world building which leads to a lot more to speculation.
Oda kind of played into Money and Miles here, because as popular as shit like Naruto is, it's side story immediately flopped. One Piece is still fucking going and once it's done, Oda is just going to abuse the fuck out of SBS (like he isn't already) to fill in gaps, kind of like Rowling with her retcons. He also got a LA out of it that apparently is the least shitty Live Action from Netflix, so he's actually in a stronger place than Naruto ever was.
