Genuine answer, they were among the first, maybe even the very first in the area to try their hand at a Western style steak. Or at least they were the only one the gaijin boys in the locker room could find drunkenly stumbling around town. Owner was a mark, and got em the jackets, which the gaijin put over by wearing them often. They were homesick and I suppose even a shitty steak would remind them of a diner you'd find on the road back home. It turned into a habit, and habit turned into tradition. Now anybody can buy the jacket, which has gotten much worse in fabric, stitching, quality and sourcing, and the owners have never bothered to sex up the menu in response to a steady increase of international eyes on their product who know what a good steak tastes like. Surely of they just got a clue, they could at least become a decent yakiniku joint.
