Refs do a lot of work, they are usually in on the results and spots, that's why you see AEW's trash refs hardcore sticking to them no matter what. They make sure wrestlers are okay after big bumps, they call spots if they are wearing earpieces, they also regulate the pace of the matches (space big bumps, allow people who took the bump some time to recover, tell wrestlers when they are on ads breaks and when they are back...etc). Some are trained wrestlers too.
