I shit on AEW a lot and can't stand a lot of their roster booking or presentation, but
Edge is legitimately a big get, more for his behind the scenes than onscreen. On-screen he's going to be that Sting/Christian/Jericho style solid midcard mentor, he's veteran enough that Tony's eternal child self marks out to much to relegate him to the Claudio/Miro deadline, and too talented to be a Malakai Black. Won't do much or move the needle but will be fine.
But he's well respected, popular, well liked and is both easygoing and professional backstage. He's far more capable of being a lead by example locker room leader than Chezzer, with better instincts than the Bucks etc. He'll slot right in with Christian and Jericho.

he couldnt mentor himself into a decent feud in the wwe. there is nothing in aew except a complimentary omega feud and christian reunion. and him trying to be goofy at his age while looking like he does will be terrible.
