If you watched 2010s WWE you know how they tried to transition to a new era by throwing Sheamus/Del Rio all kinds of title runs and Rumbles and accolades and shit to get them over. As well as that failed Swagger push and trying to push Miz a little above his weight as a main event guy. Nexus too. They got a little lucky appealing to smarks and letting Bryan/Punk have their moments but both of those guys were done by 2014.
The Shield gave them 3 actual solid guys to build around who weren't as boring as Sheamus and Del Rio were. Once they could lean on Ambrose/Rollins or Rollins/Reigns to main event a PPV you'd notice Cena was able to start to take a step back and didn't have to always main event.
