the fact is that most people do not have time to watch two wrestling promotions - most don't even want to watch more than one show a week. WWE, as the established leader, is pumping out tons of programming and saturating the market on their own. most people are going to default to them for obvious reasons. AEW got their initial foothold because WWE was absolute dog shit for many years when vince was in charge. this lead to a group of people finding other, superior promotions to follow for their wrestling fix.
when triple h took over, the booking and writing improved and some acts got hot. this sent people back to WWE because the promotion went from atrocious to watchable.
AEW, TNA, NJPW - only the hardcores will follow them now. they can't take people away from WWE - WWE just has to drive people away by making the product so fucking bad that fans will break their habit and watch something else instead. but they are e-drones at heart, so when if there's a "good" angle on WWE, they'll go back home.
