I thought NXT Black and Gold was always way better than AEW and I don't know why Dynamite won.

The audience for Black and Gold were the "Omega club" types who pretended NXT was an alternative to main WWE. They then got a real alternative with the actual Elite guys they liked. Not surprised at what happened

Black and Gold was hot until those guys started hitting the main roster and not doing much so it wasn't worth the investment. They got down to Gargano, Ciampa, Cole etc. overstaying and indies were also so tapped they were down to Kross and Lee as the "big" new debuts while AEW was starting up.
AEW was the new toy for those who wanted an alternative and also aped the NXT formula.

A lot of the Black and Gold "stars" were long overdue to move on by the time they moved NXT to USA. Cole, O'Reilly, Ciampa and Gargano were getting cold and stale in NXT. WWE needed that influx of talent they got with the start of 2.0 about two years sooner to have competed with early Dynamites.
