um, ackshually, the story of Hangman Adam Page and his triumph over Kenny Omega is one of the greatest narratives of all time. It gave anxious millennials like me a hero they could identify and root for, and was part of the reason I gained the courage to come out as trans. People like Jade don't goto WWE for the money, WWE is the only wrestling company that can give you opportunities for fame inside the company. True fame outside the company if you can get popular in WWE and using that popularity to get into Hollywood or something.
Wrestlers goto AEW for money but that's good enough incentive if you just want to wrestle.

AEW is dimeless.
Now that that's out of the way, the explanation is that Knight knew his character before coming to WWE. He developed it in Impact where he also started as a heel but organically got over because of his undeniable kavorka.
