Yeah I really enjoyed it in the end. My first NJPW show so it was great seeing all the stars. Shingo and Ishii was based (even if it was basically just "u choppa me, I choppa u 101) and I always enjoy ZSJ

It sucks that njpw is in this awkward place with the western audience, like there's enough people to get English coverage but not enough people (and therefore likely not enough money either) to entice solid backstage talent long term. AEW royally fucked up Western expansion in multiple ways, commentary one of them.

AEWist here. I bought a ticket based on seeing Ospreay at Wembley, yes newfag. Wasn't interested in seeing the first half, got there midway.
Had only been in venue a few mins, standing on level 1 looking at phone for seat details, (music is playing for entrances)... Look up and some Japanese dude in white and pink is coming right at me. He thinks I'm waiting for a fist bump, so he goes for it and nearly smacks the phone out of my hand. Have NO idea who he was. Later find out he's called Shota. Funny start to the night.

Anyway, saw the last 5 matches but only enjoyed Ishii Shingo and the main event. Think the Ishii Shingo was the better match. Naito has a based vibe in person, again someone I know nothing about.

You know, I think I've come to a realisation. New Japan has almost completely changed its fanbase. Almost all the old smarks have moved on and there is a new set of fans now. So many of the new fans are people that came on during the pandemic and are excited about the future whereas the old fans are the bitter old podcasters that are slowly deciding to chop their cocks off.

I wonder if anyone else has noticed this

I've been watching NJPW since 2011 and I don't agree.
What you're noticing and misattributing is that a lot of the fans just saw NJPW as a fad and an alternative. The appeal wasn't in NJPW being NJPW, it was in NJPW being far more tolerable than WWE was with its 5 star matcherinos. Now AEW gets its 5 star matcherinos and on a better schedule, so why stick around? The fans of NJPW for NJPW's sake stuck around.

There's nothing wrong with being excited about a new generation. We've been watching Tanahashi, Okada and Naito duke it out for over a decade. Change is exciting.

There's no dribble of NJPW fans leaving to watch the tranny rodeo. There was a flux of short-term fans who got interested in 2017 and then dipped for AEW in 2019, but that's long done. The last thing a grumpy NJPW oldfig is going to do is start watching western shit again

If anything, I think the older fans are more optimistic about the upcoming transition period. They're the ones who are more patient about waiting for the next batch of guys to iron out the kinks because they've seen this before, the new fans haven't

Maybe I've been hanging around the VoW crew too much, but I've noticed a lot of negativity amongst the old school smarks as opposed to the newer fans who all seem to be really positive about NJPW.
